Is a biometric gun safe the right kind of safe for your guns?
Having a gun is a large responsibility and as gun owners, we really need to make sure we keep our guns out of the wrong hands. Unfortunately, having our guns locked up when we need them the most is not an option. (Not for me at least and probably not for your either.)
This is why I decided to start looking into buying a fingerprint gun safe. With this type of safe I figured I could quickly get to my gun while still enjoying the benefits of having it locked up. The problem I had was that this technology seemed like it could easily go wrong. I was afraid that the safe would lock me out of it at the worst time.
I even had a dream that somebody had broken into my house and I couldn’t get to my gun because my biometric gun safe wouldn’t recognize my finger print. As I researched the web I found that there are ways to get around this. Most good finger print safes come with a backup way to open them.
You’ll find that these safes will either come with a combination system, a keypad system, or a key system. The problem with the key pad and combination systems is that you need to remember the combination and since your only using them as a backup, the combination can be easy to forget.
Also, if the electronic gun safe is not taking your fingerprint, it might not take your numbers either. This is why I chose a safe with a backup key system. The one I chose was great because it hides the fact that you can enter the safe with a key. You have to lift up the logo to reveal the key hole.
What biometric gun safe should I get?
The safe I ended up getting was the Barska Biometric safe. It had great ratings and seemed very easy to use. I also liked the fact that although the safe was relatively light, it seemed to hold a lot. In addition to this, it is battery operated so you don’t have to worry about getting locked out during a power outage.
Another great feature was the fact that it can easily be bolted down. There is no point locking up your gun when an intruder can simply walk off with your entire safe. I used the mounting hardware and bolted the safe down and set everything up in less than twenty minutes.
The only real issue I have with this safe is that the safe door opens up to the right. I generally prefer safes that open down that way I don’t have to worry about where I put them.
This being said, if you want a great biometric gun safe, you really should consider the Barska. It has ample storage room, works great, and has a hidden key hole in the event that it does not.
